Affordable Advent

If, like me, you can't get your mind off of the Pottery Barn cubby organizer we featured in our Advent calendar piece, Cubby Christmas, but you can't quite commit to the price tag for this year's festivities, here are some easy options you can try for less and still achieve this fabulous effect.

Beverage Crates
Red vintage Coca-Cola crates can be turned on their sides to create 24 pockets for storing presents - one for each day leading up to Christmas.

I like this one from Vintage Avocado on Etsy:

At only $24, it's a perfect price. Or what about this Northlands Beverage Crate, also from Vintage Avocado ($26)?

Type "beverage crates" into a search engine, or scour Etsy and Ebay for Coca-Cola, Pepsi, or RC Cola crates. You'll be sure to find one that stacks up.

Don't feel like getting boxed in?
Ikea's LUNS magnetic chalkboard let's you create your calendar as you go. Each day chalk in the updated Christmas countdown. Place newly received holiday cards in one pocket, and the gift for the day in the other. Feeling ambitious? Get colored chalk or chalkboard paint markers and draw a snowscape border or a few holly leaves and berries to add a bit of holiday flair.

It's in the bag
Wrapping gifts for your Advent calendar in traditional paper is nice, but why not pay homage to Santa's sack of presents? Try filling red and green pouches with chocolates, costume jewelry, lip balm, and other tiny treats. Stow each sack in your Advent calendar cubbies, or grab clear 3M mini-hooks and create a grid of little colorful pouches directly on a blank wall.

Welcome to the start of Advent! Even if you're a bit behind, it's never too late to get started! Just fill the cubbies you've missed with twigs, ornaments and other festive decor.
