This week, Host-It Notes reader Angie wrote in with a party question:

I am throwing a surprise party for my mom in mid-May and am looking for some fun inspiration. I am thinking along the lines of a vintage garden party. I want to use fresh flowers and a lemon poppyseed bundt, and am hoping to find some fun, colorful and springy ideas. Can you help me?

Angie, I'd love to help! Using your lemon poppyseed bundt cake as a kick-off point, I dreamed up a lemon-themed party for you and gathered inspirational images to get you started. Pair lemony yellow shades with an accent color like Tiffany blue, pale pink or orange for an extra pop. Embrace the lemon theme by using fresh lemons in your arrangements and offer lemon drop candies or candied lemon peel as favors. Serve your lemon bundt cake alongside scones topped with tart lemon curd. Wash it all down with some homemade lemonade—add fresh berries, lavender or mint to the juice to give it some added flavor.

For garden parties, I always like to shop the garden department for unconventional outdoor touches. Plant stands become cupcake towers or buffets. Look for wire, wood, and galvanized metals to achieve a rustic or vintage feel. Small gardening trowels can serve as candy scoops when placed next to apothecary jars full of sweets. Be sure to top your tables with some white florals for a bright, clean look. Best of luck with your upcoming party!
