90 Cupcakes for a 90th Birthday!

Do you or a loved one have a big birthday coming up? If so, here's one reason to love getting older. Parties get better as you age when the dessert you serve is cupcakes totaling the celebrant's age!! Over the weekend my family gathered together to celebrate my grandmother's 90th birthday. It was a wonderful family event and a great opportunity to bake 90 delicious cupcakes to enjoy! Switch up the flavors—thanks to my industrious aunts we ate apple cake, carrot cake, vanilla, devils food, and lemon blueberry cupcakes. Why have piles of candles when you can have piles of cupcakes? Happy birthday to my cute grandma! (That's her along with my sister, mother and me on the right.)

Witches' Night Out

My aunt throws a Witches' Night Out party each year for her girlfriends, so I'm always on the lookout for fun and easy ideas that fit her theme. My two favorite finds this year? Donut Broomsticks via Hostess With the Mostess and I Scream Sandwitches from MarthaStewart.com. So cute! Click the links above to head to their tutorials.

Have a Pac-Man Halloween!

How adorable! This is the kind of cheeky ghost craft I love. Kate from Mini-eco shares the tutorial and a template for making your own. File this one away to make in the traditional colors for a child's Pac-Man birthday party too! {Spotted via Craftzine}

Barking Sands Vintage

You know I love vintage serveware, and with the piles of online shops out there it's like having my own team of personal shoppers picking their way through estate sales and thrift shops around the country. My latest store crush is on Barking Sands Vintage. They're slaying me with their pretty finds, like a hobnail cake stand or this gorgeous square number (love!):

Since I already have something ridiculous like 13+ cake stands I probably can't justify purchasing these right now...but maybe you could! Check them out at www.etsy.com/shop/BarkingSandsVintage.

Brain Cupcakes

Now here's a smarty-pants idea—Living Locurto has a great tutorial on making a jar full of tasty, tasty brains. Maybe I've been watching too much of The Walking Dead, but I'm totally loving this!! These combine strawberry cake, raspberry jam, and some clever use of frosting to make brainy little cupcakes in a jar.

Visit Living Locurto for the full details on making your own edible jar of brains. Plus there are free printable tags!

Cake Stand Heaven Online

A reader comment alerted me to my new favorite place for ogling tiered cake stands. It's www.cakestandheaven.com, a UK-based online shop full of both new and vintage cake stands, plates, and other pretty china and tableware. Of their new tiered stands I love the Vera Wang Ikat style for something a little out of the ordinary.

For a more feminine, traditional style I'd go for this colorful Royal Albert Rosa patterned stand.

And I love their selection of more quirky stands, like this one with a teapot on top!

Happy tea time!

Free Owl Invites

I love free printables. My latest favorite is this Owl Invite designed by Brightside Prints as seen on One Charming Party. Print and cut them yourself along with your party details, or have custom invites made by the Brightside folks. Click on the pictures after this link to download the PDF of the design over at One Charming Party. I know these are for Halloween, but don't you think they'd make a classy invitation for a Harry Potter Party too?

DIY Vanilla Extract

I hate to do this to you. I really do. But it's time to start thinking about the holidays. Look, we could put it off, but who are we kidding? The longer we wait, the more likely we are to see those dreams of making heartfelt handmade gifts slip away. So do yourself a favor. Start early on the homemade goodies. At least take a look at this nifty tutorial for making your own vanilla extract—the perfect hostess gift, stocking stuffer, or component in a food-themed gift basket. VIsit Bake at 350 for the simple and sweet tutorial.

Birthday Onesie

I saw this cute onesie idea over at Fancy Frugal Life (original idea inspired by this). Meant to be used as a birth announcement photo, this DIY just takes a white onesie, an iron-on fuse sheet, and a sharpie. Head to Fancy Frugal Life for the instructions.

A birth announcement is adorable of course, but don't you think this would be a great save the date for your next party? Put that baby in a Santa cap and it's a dated invitation for your holiday party!

Food Art is Good Art

I'm always fan of lovely, mouth-watering art. Dessert art elevates my favorite thing—sweets—to the next level. My latest find are these food watercolors from JoJo La Rue's Watercolor Art. The prints, cards, and even the original watercolors definitely fall into my affordable range. Whether you want to go low-brow with M&Ms (or Pabst Blue Ribbon for the tipplers!) or opt for classic cupcakes, there's a lot of pretty goodness to choose from. Find them all, plus pretty fashion prints, at www.etsy.com/shop/jojolarue

Embroidered Cake

Mmmm....crafty cake goodness! I spotted this gorgeous cake out there in the blogosphere (if you saw it first let me know so i can thank you!). Simple + stunning pretty much sums this one up for me. Jimmy sprinkles carefully placed on the cake top give it an embroidered look. Visit Clockwork Lemon for the full details and more delicious photos.
